Alleluia. Puer natus est nobis, et Filius datus est nobis, Cuius imperium super humerum eius. Alleluia. Gregorian chant takes its name from Pope Gregory I, who reigned from 590 to 604. Most Gregorian chant, however, came after his time, and this particular one, Puer natus est nobis (A Boy Is Born to Us), probably appeared a century or more later. As with all Gregorian chant, there is no meter specified in the score here and the singing is monophonic. Puer natus est nobis, et filius datus est nobis : cuius imperium super humerum eius : et vocabitur nomen eius, magni consilii angelus.

Tallis must have written the Puer natus est nobis mass for seven voices for a special occasion. No definitive evidence has been found, Here the initial P begins the Introit for the Christmas Mass, which is taken from the Book of Isaiah (9:6): Puer natus est nobis (A child is born to us). The prophet Puer nátus est nóbis, et fílius dátus est nóbis: cújus impérium super húmerum éjus: et vocábitur nómen éjus, mágni consílii Angelus.
